#1 Pest II: The One Year Mark

Monday was the biggest national holiday for Hungarians ever. Stevensday! It marks when St. Steven, the first Christian king, was crownd king of Hungary in the year 1000. So this marks the beginning of the Hungarian nation. They even have St. Steven's mumified hand in a golden box that they march around the city. There were some weird Hungarian bagpipes in the parade. Kind of weird to an American, but it's amazing that there has been a continuous Hungarian state for 1800 years. That's a pretty big deal.

The picture from last week of me playing the bagpipes. Here's the story: Last P-day in Nyíregyháza we went over to a members house who lives in England most of the time, and lives in Hungary for the summer. He has some pipes he bought in Scotland, but they are the kind of pipes that tourists would buy, so they weren't very nice and they didn't sound very good. He also had a cheap kilt that we put on for the picture. It was kind of silly.

This past week has both felt very long and very short all at the same time. I successfully moved from Nyíregyháza to Pest. I am sad to have left Nyíregyháza after only 5 weeks, but I am very happy about moving back to Pest. It feels like coming home after vacation. Well kind of, now I'm in the apartment with Elder Surdu that I've been in so many times before on splits but now it's my apartment, so that's weird because the first day and half of my new area it felt kind of like being on a split. Everyone at church was surprised to see me again, it was fun. Some people didn't realize I had left, which is funny, and others were suprised that I was the new elder. The Bishop seemed super happy to see me.

My Companion, Elder Surdu

This week we had MLC which is Mission Leadership Council. We had all of the zone leaders and sister training leaders in both Romania and Hungary in Buda this time. They flew in all the leaders from Romania. And with all the zone leaders in town our apartment was super full with the zone leaders from the east, southeast, and west zones; Elders' Smith, Udy, Huber, Fales, Surdu and I were all together. That was a fun reunion for all of us. We got to spend the day with the Romanian zone leaders, streeting with them and enteraining them. We talked about a bunch of stuff, it was cool to see and meet some people from the other side of the mission. The focus of the meeting was on mission unity between the two halves of the mission, but it will be interesting to see how that develops because the two halves are so isolated from each other. Except for this meeting and some other big changes the mission mostly feels like it's still the Hungary mission.

This week we met with our progressing investigator Robert, He has been going through a really hard time lately. We talked with him about prayer and read Énos 1-12 and invited him to have more quality prayers so he can receive a witness that the Book of Mormon is true. We also met with Lajos and Katalin who are some other investigators, we haven't had contact with them for a long time so we mainly just talked about how they are doing. We talked about the self reliance program and they are interested in doing it with us. We are just working with the ward to start up a self reliance group.

We meet with Anna and two of her daughters. They have been investigators for a while, the lesson didn't go very well, we read 3 Nephi 11, but unfortunately they argued with us about why they have to keep the commandments to be baptised, they espcially wanted to argue about the Word of Wisdom and they were really hung up on it, so it wasn't very productive. We are going to give them some time before we meet with them again. Last week we found a new investigator while whiteboarding named Laci, he is a young man, hopefully this next week we will be able to keep meeting with him.

We had a lesson with a member named Dezső while waiting for one of our lessons that he helped us with. We talked about the importance of reading the Book of Mormon every day. I think the new Book of Mormon initiative could really help him get into a better reading habit. **The european area is going to do a 21 day book of mormon challenge and advertisment event.

We also met with a recent convert named Agi and talked with her about preparing to go to the temple in the fall, she is such a sweet spirit, and so excited to go.

This week I started a new study of the Book of Mormon about the Holy Spirit, its attributes and how it works with us. I already have learned so much. I learned this week from Nephi that the Holy Spirit will inspire our minds to know where to go and what to say. I think his obedience to the promptings of the Spirit is remarkable and this week I want to focus on recognizing its promptings and then acting on them.

So my zone, and our district, are super small now because the mission is down missionaries due to some challenges in the missionary department. Aparently the mission will have to wait several months, if not until the new year for missionary levels to get back up to normal, so it feels pretty sparce and that is strange.

Yesterday we got our new release dates because of the new 6 week transfers I'll leave Hungary on August 22nd, 2019. Which makes this week my 1 year mark and my mission six days short of 24 months. I'm kind of sad that I lost 35 days of my mission. It also means that I have exactly 1 year left, I don't know if I'm ready to be half way done with my mission. WOW! I feel like I have so much more to do, so much more to learn.

I'm super excited to hear that Joey started his mission, and that Trustin got his call to Ohio, more missionaries! I'm not alone!!! I hope you are all doing well. I'm loving my life!
