#4 Kispest: Come Listen to a Prophet's Voice

This week was certainly a good one. This week we had the opportunity of teaching quite a few lessons. We have been helping our progressing investigator quit smoking and he has been making really great progress. We also did service again in a near by school, and taught the kids about the water cycle and other water related topics in English, it was a lot of fun.

Budapest is infiltrated by Scots. The Scottish soccer team is playing Hungary so there are loads of drunk Scots in kilts everywhere! We had a funny encounter with some Scott's and their bagpipes on the subway, but that's all I'm going to say about that.

I also had the opportunity to go on a split with Elder Graham, who is one of the zone leaders in Pest. I went up there and his companion elder Durney went to Kispest with Elder Gabel. It was a good split, we taught a mother and daughter who just recently joined the church and we taught a couple about spiritual experiences. Also, I think more people would want to talk to us on the street if we gave out balloons, just a thought.

For the Easter initiative #mindigmellettedáll, Elder Gabel and I made our own signs and took pictures in front of parliament so that we could share them on Facebook.

Yesterday we met with this guy who we received as a referral from the APs, we answered a lot of his questions and about the Book of Mormon, the weirdest part was that it was in English, it just feels weird to talk about the gospel in English.

But the highlight of the week was for sure being able to watch the sessions of General Conference. I love conference!! It was really wonderful to be able to sustain the new prophet, Nelson elnök. I'm excited about the new apostles that were announced and the new temples and interesting changes for priesthood organization and home teaching. It will be good. I think from my first listen my favorite talk was either Elder Uchtdorf's or Elder Bednar's talks.

In my personal study:

I read a really cool talk from Elder Bednar called, “Retaining a Remission of your Sins.” It blew my mind! I hadn’t fully understood the relationship between baptism, the sacrament, and the gift of the Holy Ghost; and now I am convinced that receiving the Gift of the Holy Ghost is the most important of the three ordinances. Joseph Smith said three things that convinced me that the Gift of the Holy Ghost is the purpose for baptism and the sacrament, he said: 1) Baptism is preparatory to the gift of the Holy Ghost, 2) Baptism without the Holy Ghost is only half a baptism, and 3) baptism without fire is of no use. Elder Bednar said that Baptism is a cleansing from sin which cleansing is necessary for the Holy Ghost to come within us and when we take the sacrament we renew baptismal covenants which is another cleansing, so we can receive the Holy Ghost which can sanctify us. Each one acting together to provide the way for us to have the Holy Ghost with us continually.

At district meeting Elder Gable gave a super awesome lesson about why bad things happen to good people. Which is something that I struggle with. We read this verse from Alma chapter 60 in the Book of Mormon, that specifically relates to events where good people are killed by wicked people, it says, “For the Lord suffereth the righteous to be slain that his justice and judgment may come upon the wicked; therefore ye need not suppose that the righteous are lost because they are slain; but behold, they do enter the rest of the Lord their God.” So this may be one explanation for why death is merciful to the righteous and why the Lord allows it, but it doesn’t completely explain to me why good people have to suffer. I wrote a few thoughts in my notebook that may answer that question. 1) Maybe bad things happen to help us turn to the Lord, 2) Sometimes bad things happen to good people because God will not destroy agency (freedom to choose) in order to prevent bad people from making bad choices, and 3) Sometimes it’s just life. Then we talked about the scripture from the Book of Mormon in 2 Nephi 2:25, “Men are that they might have joy.” And the connected scripture in verse 23 which says that if we “knew no misery” we would have no joy. We also read a quote from a talk by then Elder Nelson (now President Nelson) where he tells a story of Eliza R. Snow who said that, “None but saints can be happy under every circumstance.” If we let our sorrows be swallowed up in the joy of Christ as stated in Alma 31:38 then it doesn’t really matter what happens to us we can always be happy because that joy that comes to us comes from Jesus Christ and that joy is eternal joy. We talked about how we can turn to the Lord in every circumstance no matter how bleak. Perhaps without the trials and pains of life we wouldn’t be able to grow, learn, and choose. We need to have these experiences to become what we need to become so we can return home. It was a good lesson.I love you all and hope all is well.

Szep hétet kívánok!

Morgan elder.
